Veterinarian
Dr. Jodie James
Dr. Jodie James has been practicing veterinary medicine in midcoast Maine for the past 23 years. She came to PAWS from private practice to help initiate and develop their shelter veterinary program. Dr. James enjoys surgery and has training in traditional Chinese veterinary medicine. Her favorite aspect of shelter medicine is kitten season! She wholeheartedly believes every animal deserves equal access to veterinary care and is passionate about providing care for homeless animals. When she’s not kissing kittens she enjoys skiing, tennis and spending time with her family.

Veterinarian
Dr. Maria Salvaggio
I have worked as a veterinarian on the mid-coast since graduating from the University of Pennsylvania in 1987. My working career, although primarily with companion animals, always included farm animals and horses. I retired after practicing for 16 years at Harbor Road Veterinary Hospital. Since retiring I have explored different interests in the animal world, including volunteering at Hope Elephants and as a trail veterinarian for the
Can-Am 250 Sled Dog Race. For over 10 years I have been a responder for the Marine Mammal Stranding Program based at College of the Atlantic.
Six years ago I started volunteering at PAWS in the medical facility. It has been very rewarding to help the injured and the sick, to provide routine care and to perform spay and neuter surgeries so that animals can be quickly adopted.
To help in the shelter environment is to provide services to those most in need. It has been very gratifying to comfort and heal those who are frightened and homeless through no fault of my own. I am very grateful for the opportunity to use my skills to help our community and to provide care for those creatures who give so much to us.
